Can we all take a second to appreciate the incredible, deep sea vampire squid? Here are some quick facts: 1. Its scientific name is Vampyroteuthis infernalis, which literally means "vampire squid from hell". 2. It shares similarities with both squids and octopuses, which puts it in its own order: Vampyromorphida. 3. It is bioluminescent! When threatened, the vampire squid flails its arms around and flashes light via photophores, which disorients predators.
